At one point in college I found out that you could go through the parts of the town that were abandoned after the Tsunami and nuclear disaster. Since then I’ve been very interested in going there myself. Even though I was interested in going there I didn't know much about the events that happened there. I vaguely remember the tsunami and meltdown happening in 2011, but I didn't pay close attention to it. So most of the information was new to me once I got there.
Much of the area that is still unsafe to live in is in smaller towns that are south east of the city of Fukushima. To make the areas livable again the topsoil is removed and put under large tarps where it will remain until around 2050, at that point the radiation levels should be low enough for it to be safe to use again.
I went on a small tour that was just me and 3 other tourists. It was very informative and we got to see a lot of the abandoned buildings in the area. I was surprised at the end where we got to meet someone who lived there when the tsunami happened and to hear his story.
The town is still rebuilding with the help of major stimulus funds from the Japanese government. I was told that the government want to make the area as prosperous as possible to ease any concerns that the public may have regarding nuclear energy.
I would like to go back one day and get a tour of the nuclear facility itself; I missed my chance to see it because it is a separate tour that only happens once a month.
